Across the bridge on Ordnance Island is a replica of the "Deliverence", sitting on top of an area which was once used by the British Army to store cannon, shot and shell - and before that was used by St. Georgians to punish malefactors with gibbet and stocks.
The original Deliverence was built to carry survivors of the shipwrecked company of the Sea Venture to Virginia. The Sea Venture's wreck on the uninhabited Bermudas in 1609 led to the colonisation of Bermuda in 1612. |
